Toolkit at a Glance

The Career Design Canvas an easy-to-use and structured tool to navigate your way to your dream career.

Click on the image below to start your own!

Some component parts of this Career Design Canvas include:

1) Wit – You can find out more about Multiple Intelligence here. If you want to find out what sorts of Smarts you have, this abridged assessment by Dr Branton Shearer is a good way to start.  Your natural Smarts will make learning in particular areas a lot easier, and you may be able to progress deeper in those fields as well.

2) Grit – read about it here.  But that’s not all, there are 6 other Performance Character traits that best-selling author spotlighted in his book “How Children Succeed”: Curiosity, Gratitude, Grit, Optimism, Self-Control, Social Intelligence and Zest.  Each of this has been scientifically co-related with enhanced success in life and careers.

3) Skills – there are a large number of skills that we could choose to pick up in our lifetimes.  How far we get on each of them could broadly be thought of as: Wit x (Grit and other Performance Character) = Skills.

In addition, some skills work well together in certain career tracks.  In this fast-moving and rapidly evolving world, having a variety of deep skills helps us keep current in our careers.

  • You can assess your skills against your desired job with our Level Up tool.
  • Go to My Dream Job and see what skills are needed for your ideal jon!

4) Fit – find out more about it here. Whether you find joy and fulfilment in a particular job role or company depends on whether that job or company is a fit with:

  • your personal Values and Career Anchors,
  • your Personality and Career Interests,
  • your preferred Working Environment, and
  • the Practicalities of your current life stage.

How to Use the Career Design Canvas

RESEARCH – you can click on the links above to learn more about each of the component parts of the Career Design Canvas.  Simply take these short quizzes or read the descriptions in each link to know more about them, and yourself!

When you have a fuller understanding of Wit, Grit and Fit, you can then fill in the Career Design Canvas for a one-page view across all the key factors of whether you could enjoy a particular job.

REFLECT – Does what you have filled in the Career Design Canvas reflect who you are as a person?

You may or may not like what you see on that page but it’s important that you be absolutely honest so you get a true view of your strengths and weaknesses, as well as your preferences and dislikes.  This puts you in a great position to make better decisions to maximize your strengths and stay true to yourself.

REACH OUT  – now that you have a sense of who you are, you can start looking out for jobs and industries that fit your unique strengths, personality and values.

The SkillsFuture website is a great place to start your exploration.  The Education and Career Guidance (ECG) staff in your school will also be able to guide you through.  When you have found a few industries or jobs that you are interested in, you can consider reaching out to people actually working in those industries and jobs.

Not sure how to get started on any of this?

Because you have played the Career Design Life Game, you are now our Alumni – do feel free to get in touch.

REMEMBER: this is an iterative process.

You will grow as a person, and your life stage will also change, so do repeat this process as many rounds as required – it will give you clarity into the important next steps you should take in your life and career.

And most importantly, do have joy in the journey.  We only pass by this way once ever, so do have a great time while being a beacon of light in this world!

Yours sincerely,
Joseph Tan
